Essential Pre-Road Trip Car Checklist: What to Check Before Hitting the Road

Planning a road trip is exciting, but ensuring your car is ready for the journey is crucial for a smooth and safe experience. Before you set out on your adventure, take some time to perform a thorough check of your vehicle at Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, CA. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to inspect before you hit the open road.

           1. Tires and Tire Pressure

Your tires are your car's only contact with the road, so they need to be in top condition. Here's what to check:

             Tire Tread:

Inspect the tread depth to ensure your tires have enough grip. Worn-out tires can be dangerous, especially in wet conditions.

            Tire Pressure:

Check your tire pressure, including the spare. Properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency and reduce the risk of blowouts.

            Alignment and Balance:

If your car pulls to one side or if the steering wheel vibrates, get your alignment and balance checked.

           2. Fluids

Your vehicle relies on various fluids to keep everything running smoothly. Before your trip, make sure to check:

            Engine Oil:

Ensure the oil is at the right level and check its color. If it’s dark or dirty, consider an oil change.

            Coolant:

Check the coolant level and top it off if necessary. This prevents your engine from overheating.

             Brake Fluid:

Make sure your brake fluid is at the proper level. If it’s low, it could indicate a leak or worn brake pads.

            Transmission Fluid:

Low or dirty transmission fluid can lead to shifting problems. Check the level and condition.

             Windshield Washer Fluid:

Top off the washer fluid and check that your wipers are working properly for clear visibility.

           3. Brakes

Your brakes are essential for safety, especially during a long trip. Inspect the following:

            Brake Pads:

Listen for squeaking or grinding noises, which may indicate worn brake pads.

             Brake Rotors:

Check for any signs of warping or uneven wear, which can affect braking performance.

            Brake Pedal:

Ensure the brake pedal feels firm and responsive when pressed.

           4. Battery

A dead battery can quickly ruin a road trip. Here’s how to ensure yours is in good shape:

             Battery Terminals:

Check for any corrosion around the terminals and clean them if necessary.

            Battery Charge:

Test the battery’s charge. If it’s low or weak, consider replacing it before your trip.

           5. Lights and Signals

Your vehicle’s lights and signals are essential for visibility and communication with other drivers:

            Headlights and Taillights:

Ensure both are functioning properly and replace any burned-out bulbs.

             Turn Signals:

Check that all turn signals are working correctly.

             Brake Lights:

Have someone help you test your brake lights to ensure they activate when the brake pedal is pressed.

           6. Belts and Hoses

Belts and hoses are critical for keeping your engine running smoothly:

             Serpentine Belt:

Inspect the serpentine belt for any signs of wear, cracks, or fraying. A broken belt can lead to engine failure.

            Hoses:

Check all hoses for leaks, bulges, or cracks, especially those connected to the radiator and coolant system.

           7. Emergency Kit

Even with the best preparation, unexpected situations can arise. Make sure your emergency kit is stocked with:

Spare Tire, Jack, and Lug Wrench:

Ensure these are in good condition and that you know how to use them.

            Jumper Cables:

In case your battery dies, jumper cables can get you back on the road quickly.

            First Aid Kit:

A basic first aid kit is essential for minor injuries.

             Roadside Flares or Reflective Triangles:

These can help alert other drivers if you’re stranded on the side of the road.

             Flashlight:

A flashlight with fresh batteries is crucial for nighttime repairs or inspections.

           8. Air Conditioning and Heating

A comfortable cabin temperature is key to a pleasant road trip:

            A/C and Heating:

Test both your air conditioning and heating systems to ensure they’re working properly.

Replace the cabin air filter if it’s dirty to ensure clean air circulation.

5 Top Reasons Why Regular Vehicle Maintenance is Essential

Maintaining a vehicle is about more than just keeping it running; it's about ensuring safety, longevity, and efficiency. Whether you're a daily commuter or someone who enjoys weekend drives, regular vehicle service is crucial. Here are the top five reasons why consistent vehicle maintenance in Belmont, CA at Spiteri's Complete Auto Service is vital:

           1. Safety First: Prevent Accidents

Your vehicle's safety depends significantly on its condition. At Spiteri's Complete Auto Service, we prioritize your safety by performing thorough inspections and maintenance, such as checking brakes, tires, fluids, starting and charging systems and lights, to prevent potential hazards. For instance, worn-out brake pads or under-inflated tires can lead to accidents. By addressing these issues during regular service at Spiteri's, you're reducing the risk of breakdowns and ensuring that your vehicle is safe for you and others on the road.

           2. Prolong the Life of Your Vehicle

Cars are significant investments, and like any investment, you want to maximize its lifespan. Regular maintenance at Spiteri's Complete Auto Service, including oil changes, fluid checks, and engine inspections, keeps your car running smoothly. Neglecting these can lead to more serious problems down the road, potentially shortening your vehicle's life. Our consistent care helps to avoid costly repairs and ensures that your car remains reliable for years to come.

           3. Improve Fuel Efficiency

A well-maintained vehicle operates more efficiently, which means better fuel economy. By regularly servicing your engine, keeping your tires properly inflated, and ensuring your air filters are clean, Spiteri's Complete Auto Service helps you achieve better mileage. This not only saves you money at the pump but also reduces your carbon footprint, making regular maintenance a win-win for both your wallet and the environment.

           4. Maintain Vehicle Value

If you plan to sell or trade in your vehicle at some point, its condition will significantly affect its resale value. A car with a documented history of regular maintenance at Spiteri's Complete Auto Service is more attractive to potential buyers. It shows that the vehicle has been well-cared for and is less likely to have hidden issues. Our regular service helps maintain your car’s value and ensures you get a fair price when it's time to move on to your next vehicle.

           5. Avoid Costly Repairs

Small issues, if left unchecked, can turn into big, expensive problems. For example, a minor oil leak might seem like a small inconvenience, but if ignored, it can lead to significant engine damage. Regular maintenance at Spiteri's Complete Auto Service helps to catch these small issues before they escalate. By investing in our service, you're preventing potential future breakdowns and saving money in the long run.

           Conclusion

Packed with ASE-Certified Technicians who are highly trained in hybrid repair, Spiteri's Complete Auto Service uses the finest diagnostic equipment and has earned The Blue Seal of Excellence and many other awards to help their customers drive away feeling safe. Spiteri's Complete Auto Service also dishes informative segments to keep their customers up to date on various topics. Today, we are discussing the needs of a hybrid vehicle and how it may differ from a standard vehicle.

The main difference in hybrid vehicle maintenance versus a standard automobile is the battery air filter. These electric motors use energy stored in batteries to help the vehicle run without gasoline, DC/DC converter, thermal system, and electric traction motor. Hybrid vehicles are powered by an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors, which uses energy stored in batteries. A hybrid vehicle cannot be plugged in to charge the battery. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine. The batter can also reduce engine idling when the vehicle is stopped.

A low-voltage battery provides electricity to start the vehicle before the traction battery is engaged. The DC/DC converter converts higher-voltage DC power from the traction battery pack to the lower DC power needed to run vehicle accessories. This process also aids in recharging the auxiliary battery. Thermal cooling maintains the correct operating temperature in the engine, electric motor, and power electronics.

Hybrid batteries are costly and usually come with an 8-year, 80,000-mile warranty to relieve the buyer of the expense of frequent battery replacements. Additional maintenance is required to prevent expensive costs to replace this unique filter and keep the vehicle running smoothly. Brake pads are another advantage for a hybrid owner. Brake pads require fewer replacements resulting in less cost, which saves the owner money on parts and maintenance. Switching from electricity to gasoline is a big adjustment for any automobile, and a hybrid has the advantage of reducing your gasoline costs.

Hybrid vehicles need oil changes, belt changes, tire alignment, fluid, wiper replacement, and just about everything else that a standard vehicle needs. Some additional exceptions are imported performance and luxury vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with advanced systems that require frequent maintenance scheduling compared to the average car. But, the main advantage of a hybrid vehicle is less gas use. Hybrids must have their transmissions inspected, a possible smog check, and an annual car inspection in some states.

How often to change oil filter

When to Change your Oil Filter

What Type of Driver Are You?

How often you change your oil and oil filter includes many variables associated with the type of driving and vehicle age. All variables must be calculated to protect your vehicle’s engine. So, depending on how many miles you drive, the type of vehicle, and the driving you do, that tells us what your vehicle needs.

May I suggest that you open your manufacturer’s book and flip to the engine section? Inside this wonderful little book is where you’ll find information on all the specifications about your vehicle. The book uses an average and then computes an average of vehicle mileage based on statistical data to suggest when you should have your oil and oil filter changed. It’s a guideline of course, because the book doesn’t know what type of driving you do.

Consistency is usually the best answer. If your type of driving is consistent and you change your oil every 3,000 miles, then your preventative maintenance should be an oil and oil filter change every 3,000 miles. If you’re driving primarily in the city with various starts, stops, braking, acceleration, and deceleration, your oil and filter change may be slightly different.

If you only drive highway miles, consider changing your oil and filter every 6,000 miles. Driving highway-only miles is difficult to gauge because a driver usually drives some side street to get to the highway. Highway driving puts less stress on the engine, and the vehicle’s RPMs are more consistent overall. This means your engine runs more efficiently than the multiple stop-and-go from city driving.

If you drive a newer vehicle, your manufacturer may suggest an oil and oil filter change every 5,000, 6,000, or 7,000 miles.

The key for any driver is to have a vehicle maintenance plan and stick to it. A preventative oil and filter change plan from Spiteri’s Auto Service in Belmont, CA, removes all the guesswork and variables so you can focus on driving. Spiteri’s will examine the oil’s viscosity, inspect the oil filter and notify you of the condition of your oil and filter. They will ask what type of driving you do and how many miles you’re traveling on average. Then, they will make professional recommendations for when to have your oil and filters changed.

           When to Buy New Tires

Since 1986, Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, CA, has been servicing vehicles for clients with complete professionalism in auto services. Spiteri's Complete Auto Service is a State of California Star Certified smog check and auto service facility with expertise in German, Japanese, hybrid, and domestic vehicles with ASE-certified technicians. We’re also a top-rated tire dealer and repair specialist and carry a variety of tire brands for any budget and vehicle.

I noticed an object in my tire and was wondering what to do. I currently live in a construction zone. Many neighbors, construction workers, and new home buyers have experienced construction debris lodged into their tires. Some of these perpetrators were nails, screws, glass, or unknown foreign objects that damaged new and used tires without discrimination.

What’s a plug? A plug is a small piece of rubber with an adhesive backing placed into a tire. Plugs are durable solutions and stronger than patches but require more effort to install into the tire. You should not plug a tire if it’s near the side of the tire and has an irregular shape, large hole, or thick object. Suppose the tire was abused after the perpetrator arrived. In that case, I’m talking about driving a distance with the known object in the tire. If a bubble is found, we may consider purchasing new tires.

What is a patch, and when do we patch a tire? We patch a tire when the puncture is less than a quarter of an inch in diameter, some shops may have slightly different variances, but this is close to a patch rule. If the hole is considered large, we patch the hole. If the foreign object is on the side of the tire, called the sidewall, you do not want to use a patch for this location. It is recommended a new tire be installed. If a new tire is recommended, a set of two is usually recommended to keep even wear so tires can be rotated.

Plugs and patches have a shelf life of many years. After your tire is plugged or patched, I recommend buying at least two new tires. This will alleviate any doubts about plugs and patches and will provide you with the satisfaction of knowing all four tires are in good operating condition. If you have any questions about tire plugs and tire patches, please stop into Spiteri's Complete Auto Service for a consultation to plug or patch your damaged tire.

You can also refer to the US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Tire Industry Association (TIA). They have their standards for tire safety. If you have any concerns, contact Spiteri's Complete Auto Service professionals. They will analyze the tire situation and make recommendations for safety when operating a vehicle with a foreign object in the tire.

If you already own a hybrid or if you’re seriously considering purchasing one, you know that batteries are an important feature of this greener, more modern form of transportation. Even so, you might have missed a few details that can help you understand your car, maintain it as long as possible, and prepare you for eventual repairs. You rely on an electrical connection to charge your batteries, and you can count on Spiteri’s Auto Service in Belmont, California, to charge your knowledge about your power cells–and fix the car when you need it.

           Basic Working Knowledge

A hybrid vehicle is so named because it uses both a gasoline-powered motor and battery power to operate the vehicle. This is in contrast to a traditional car that uses the battery for power during cranking and then relies upon the alternator to keep generating the needed electrical power. It is also substantially different from an all-electric auto that runs solely on battery power. Those batteries are larger, more expensive, and offer only a limited travel distance before recharging becomes necessary.

With an ability to make a nearly undetectable transition between power sources, the hybrid uses an electric battery, a 12-volt lead-acid battery, and a gasoline engine. When the electric battery is powering the car, it recharges using regenerative braking. (When you apply the brakes, the battery is charging.) When needed, the more traditional gasoline power takes over. Because the vehicle operates using gas only part of the time, it is more fuel-efficient than a car powered solely by combustion.

How is a hybrid battery different?

Although it’s called “a” (singular) battery, the hybrid model is, in reality, a multiple-celled battery pack. That’s necessary for the amount of energy needed to power the car. Two electrodes separated by polymer film (to prevent a short circuit) sit in an electrolyte solution. When the vehicle is on, the electrodes are bridged.

While electric technology continues to advance, the lifespan of hybrid batteries has been a concern. A hybrid vehicle cannot operate without its special battery, so ignoring a failed component isn’t an option. Most manufacturers anticipate that their batteries will last for about eight years or 100,000 miles, but some owners have noted that they don’t always reach this performance milestone. Therefore, drivers must plan on battery purchases as part of their hybrid car’s service and repair routine. The good news is that batteries are lasting longer as technology improves. Also, manufacturers other than new car producers are now making batteries. This affords hybrid owners an alternative to buying batteries at the dealership. As you maintain your hybrid vehicle, consider Spiteri’s Auto Service in Belmont, California, your local go-to hybrid repair specialist.

Owning a vehicle isn’t cheap, but most of us need private transportation to go about our daily lives. At Spiteri’s Auto Service in Belmont, California, we understand your need to reach a balance between having a reliable car and maintaining a positive bank balance. We’ll talk with you honestly about the nature and immediacy of needed repairs and point you toward specials when we can. We’re here to help you so that a breakdown doesn’t break your bank account.

The total cost of auto repair is actually about more than just the bill. Without your vehicle, will you have a way to get to work? If public transportation or carpooling is an option for you, that’s great, but if your car is your sole means of putting yourself in a position to earn a paycheck, car repair takes on a heightened level of seriousness. The cost of a breakdown could equal the loss of your income. What’s more, keeping your automobile up to date with needed preventive maintenance services will be less expensive over time than paying for the more extensive repairs that result from a lack of appropriate long-term care. Your car will last a lot longer, preventing the untimely need for big repairs or replacement, if you stick to a routine of changing the oil, checking the tires, inspecting the brakes, and monitoring the air conditioning system, etc.

When you do find that you need repairs, you have a few options to ease the unplanned expense. First, let us help you prioritize needed repairs if you have multiple issues. We’ll tell you which ones are immediate mechanical and/or safety concerns and which can wait a while. (Think of the wants and needs system. You may want to fix the interior reading light that has stopped working, but you need to ensure that your headlights are in good repair.) Second, take advantage of our specials. We always have some online coupons posted, and you can find them by using the “Specials” tab on our web page. Finally, if you still find yourself in a pinch, consider options other than cash. A credit card may be an option, especially if you have one that offers a low-interest rate, 0% for a set number of months, or cash back that can be used toward future repairs or other household expenses. As long as you’re savvy regarding unfair practices and exorbitant interest rates, a short-term loan may benefit you, too.

Does My Tire Qualify For Repair, Or Should I Replace It? — Spiteri’s Automotive Service

A flat tire can deflate your mood and ruin your day but realizing you had poor or dishonest tire repair service can dampen your entire week.

We understand the need to save money, so we’re glad to help you save a little cash when you have a leaking or flat tire. However, our priority is your safety. We’ll check your tire and talk honestly with you about the bigger picture and whether your tire is a good candidate for a safe repair. If your tire has sufficient remaining tread (at least 2/32″ or 2 mm), that’s great news. We’ll also look at the size and location of the impacted area. If a puncture doesn’t exceed 1/4″ and is located within the tread pattern, it’s usually safe to fix it.

If the tire is in an overall satisfactory condition (hasn’t been driven flat, has no sidewall cracking, has no exposed belts and cords), that’s also favorable. On the other hand, you shouldn’t attempt to repair a tire with a puncture in the sidewall, a cut, or an enormous puncture. Even if someone could manage to effect a repair, it would be risky. That shoddy repair could let go at any time, causing the tire to blow out (catastrophic tire failure.) Also, a tire that is already in need of replacement due to wear and/or condition isn’t worth repairing, and it’s dangerous to do so. A final consideration for some drivers is the speed rating of the tire. If your tires are rated for high speed, some manufacturers won’t guarantee the speed rating on a repaired tire.

           Are Emissions Tests Worth It?

We love our cars, but we hate nasty air. We want to be able to drive without choking on our own fumes. The effort to help keep the air clean by limiting exhaust emissions began right here in California in 1966. Since then, more than half of all states have passed laws that require vehicles to undergo emissions testing as part of annual inspections to help them meet the air quality standards required by the federal Clean Air Act. While not all counties in every state following the same regulations, it’s likely that emissions protocol has been considered in your vehicle’s manufacturing and design. As your local inspection station, Spiteri’s Auto Service in Belmont can help you do your part to keep the air clean and to meet legal emissions requirements. If there’s a problem, our ASE certified technicians can diagnose and repair it.

           What difference does it make?

A lot! For every $1.00 Americans spend limiting emissions, we save an estimated $9.00 in healthcare, costs of environmental damage, and lost productivity. In terms of health, as use of leaded gas has been greatly reduced (eliminated in on-road vehicles, but allowed in race cars, marine engines, airplanes, etc.), the average lead level found the blood of American citizens is significantly lower than it was just a few decades ago. Because emission restrictions have tightened, our nation’s vehicle exhaust pollution per car has decreased. This is critically important because as the population, the number of cars, and societal mobility have increased, so have total emissions. Transportation accounts for 27% of greenhouse gas emissions, and on-road vehicles account for one-third of smog-producing pollution. This is particularly noticeable in our state because California is the second-largest producer of carbon dioxide emissions (in metric tons) per year.

What can I do about it?

A visit to Spiteri’s Auto Service in Belmont, California, will enable you to do your part to keep our air clean by regulating your vehicle’s emissions. We will check your emissions as part of your annual state inspection. If we find a problem, we will inform you and properly diagnose the issue. Possible reasons for your vehicle failing emissions inspection include a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, poor air/fuel mixture, a missing or non-functioning catalytic converter, or a vacuum hose leak, among others. Should you detect trouble at other times of the year, our certified mechanics can make needed repairs for you. Signs of exhaust/emission issues include a lit check engine light and the smell of gasoline when you’re driving. We can also advise you on which vehicles are exempt from California’s testing policy. Currently, exemptions include gasoline-powered vehicles year models 1975 and older, diesels 1997 and older, and certain other vehicles such as motorcycles, those powered by natural gas, and electric cars.

It’s time for a smog check, and if your car doesn’t pass, you can’t register it or keep it on the road in California. While that may feel burdensome and Exhausting, understanding how your vehicle’s exhaust operates, why it’s essential, and how it relates to emissions standards can put you back in control. For help navigating the requirements as well as any needed preventive maintenance or repair services, you can count on Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, California.

           Workings of the Exhaust System

As your auto operates using the combustion process, it produces and/or releases six gases. These are water vapor, unused oxygen, and carbon dioxide (which aren’t major causes for alarm), as well as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and nitrogen monoxide (which are toxic). There are usually some particulates (such as Mercury atoms) also present in the exhaust. Your car’s exhaust system is responsible for moving these substances away from areas that would allow them to enter the passenger cabin and cause almost immediate harm to occupants.

The exhaust manifold picks up the gases from the cylinder head and releases them through the front pipe. The gases pass through the catalytic converter, which removes harmful materials and ideally releases only harmless or inert gases. As the gases continue their journey to the outside world, they pass through the muffler. Employing a noise-canceling set of tubes, this component is designed to silence the noise resulting from the engine and the combustion process. Finally, the tailpipe sends the exhaust out and away from the vehicle.

           Emissions and Smog Checks

While the most immediate interest with the exhaust system is having it remove toxins before they can enter the passenger compartment, the second most critical function is to contain the contaminants, preventing them from being expelled into the air, damaging bystanders’ lungs, and polluting the atmosphere. In the past, as the numbers of vehicles increased and traffic thickened around cities like Los Angeles, this became a real concern. Clouds of smog (the combination of pollution, smoke, and/or fog) were seen hanging over heavily travelled areas.

To combat this problem, California (and eventually the federal government) developed and implemented emissions standards to limit the acceptable amount of contaminants spewed into the air by vehicles. Smog checks, therefore, are required (with a few exceptions) when a car is first registered in California as well as every two years after that to ensure compliance with the regulations. Although this may feel exhausting, it’s necessary, and it’s the law. However, you don’t have to become overwhelmed by smog checks. You can stay on top of preventive maintenance, smog checks, and any needed repairs at Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, California.

Employment Options in the Automotive Industry

Most of us need a job for income, but does just any mundane job make you happy? Are you living your best life if you’re bored or miserable every time you report to work? Probably not. Yet 53% of American workers report being unhappy with their current job. Maybe a better plan might be to follow your passion into a career that you truly enjoy. So what do you really love to do? If your answer involves cars and the automotive repair industry, Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, California, has a career for you.

           One Industry, Many Options

If you love cars and enjoy helping people, there are many career choices for you in auto repair. You can find employment in a service and repair shop (independently owned or part of a franchise), at a dealership, or in a collision repair and body shop. Each of these business categories includes a variety of specific jobs. Your choices include becoming an automotive technician (mechanic), a service writer, a collision repair technician, and a service department manager, among many others.

You can specialize even within these options. For example, you may be a general auto technician, performing a wide range of routine maintenance services and repairs, or you can focus on a specific segment of repairs such as brakes, transmissions, or air conditioning. You can focus on bodywork, or you can limit your scope of work to painting. You can specialize and get a certification working on the brand of vehicles you like best. Regardless of your path, you can find the exact niche that appeals to you.

In addition to these positions where you perform hands-on service and repairs, you can also find opportunities with auto related businesses. These include auto parts stores, insurance companies, educational agencies, and parts manufacturers/distributors. Not only will you be happier at work when you allow your passion for cars to drive your career choice, but you will also provide a much-needed service for your community.

           Learning Opportunities

Just as there are many avenues for pursuing a career in the auto repair industry, so there are lots ways to prepare yourself and stay current in your field. The training you will need depends upon the segment of the market you choose. Options range from on-the-job training to engineering degrees. Most individuals find that they need to obtain some formal training.

A common requirement is the combination of education, experience, and testing that leads to ASE certification. There are eight individual certification areas — Engine Repair, Automatic Trans/Transaxle, Manual Drivetrain and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electrical Systems, Heating & Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance–that lead to ASE Master Technician certification. However, there are many other areas of certification, including topics within gasoline and diesel engine repair, collision repair, and heavy-duty vehicle repair.

Most local community colleges offer certificates and/or an Associate’s Degree, as well. You’ll quickly find that although auto service and repair are usually hands-on endeavours, they are also very much part of the growing field of high-tech careers. Therefore, many technicians participate in continuing education opportunities to remain up-to-date in their specialties. ASE Master status must also be renewed every five years to ensure that technicians stay abreast of the latest information and technology.

What You Need to Know Before Your Smog Check

Is it almost time to get your car’s emissions testing and smog check? Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, California is ready to help you prepare. Here is everything you need to know to be ready for the test so you can drive your car legally and help protect the environment.

           What Emissions Testing Is

Emissions testing and smog checks are procedures that have been required for all United States vehicles since the Federal Clean Air Act was passed in 1990. They are designed to ensure that all vehicles on the road are as environmentally friendly as possible. Testing involves the monitoring of vehicles for emissions output with a pass or fail system. Each car must be tested every two years.

           Getting Ready

One of the best things any motorist can do to prepare for an emissions test is to take their car in for a service appointment. An auto technician can figure out if anything needs to be fixed or tuned up before your test. If the vehicle’s check engine light is illuminated or your exhaust system is malfunctioning, you must schedule a service appointment. Either of these issues will cause your car to fail emissions testing automatically.

           The Test

During your smog check and emissions test, a test technician will hook your car up to several diagnostic monitors. These measure the emissions that your vehicle gives off and will determine if your car passes or fails the test. There are three main factors that can make your vehicle fail the test, two of which have been mentioned previously:

            Exhaust issues

            Illuminated check engine light

            Emission release above California standards

If you did not bring your car in for service work prior to your test, you would need to get it fixed after a failed test. This is the only way that you can expect to receive a passing result. A second opinion should not be required, as most diagnostic tools are extremely accurate.

Learning how to drive is an exciting event, but navigating heavy traffic for the first time can make even the bravest student drivers tense up. Between lane changes, busy intersections and traffic jams, it’s understandable why students often feel uncomfortable when starting out in more populated areas.

If you’re a parent of a teenager learning how to drive, you naturally want to help your son or daughter learn the

necessary to confidently drive in congested streets and freeways. To help you achieve this goal, keep the following tips in mind:

Start in Areas with Lower Speed Limits and Moderate Traffic

If your teenager has mostly navigated open roads with few vehicles around, it’s probably not the best idea to send him/her onto a busy freeway during rush hour.

Gradually build your teen’s comfort and skill level by starting on streets that have moderate amounts of traffic and intermediate speed limits. You can then gradually expose him/her to areas with faster and denser traffic. This will allow your son or daughter to slowly adjust to accelerating, decelerating, and changing lanes in more bustling surroundings.

Minimize Distractions Before Hitting the Road

           Minimizing distractions

helps all motorists prevent hazards and collisions, but for student drivers who are still learning how to safely share congested roads, it’s even more important to avoid anything that could divert their attention from focusing on driving. Establish from the start that your teenager should avoid using his/her phone, adjusting the radio, changing the GPS, snacking on food, or attempting any grooming habits while operating a vehicle. With cars being so close to each other while operating at high speeds, drivers need to be highly alert to what’s going on around them.

Encourage Your Teen to Signal Early and Give Other Vehicles Room

In heavy traffic, it’s best to avoid making sudden, unexpected movements, but many drivers still act abruptly and fail to provide adequate notice when signaling. Teaching your budding driver to signal early in order to communicate his/her intentions to other drivers will help him/her prevent collisions as well as adopt conscientious driving habits.

On a similar note, it’s both a safety factor as well as a sign of respect to avoid tailgating the vehicle in front of you. While some state driving manuals explicitly state what the rule is, it’s generally best to allow about three seconds between you and the car you’re trailing. This provides some room between vehicles so you can safely react if the driver in front suddenly had to decelerate or stop.

Study Traffic Signs and Signals Ahead of Time

           Being able to

recognize and understand what traffic signs and signals mean

is a fundamental part of safe driving. The more that your son or daughter can instantly comprehend what an upcoming sign means, the more he/she will experience confidence instead of confusion and panic when approaching one. It will also allow your new driver to mentally plan what action to take next without you having to first explain what to do. This helps form the ability to efficiently keep up with the flow of traffic.

Most students remember the most familiar signs with ease, but less common ones, such as upcoming lane merges or circular intersections, are a bit more difficult to keep track of.

Find a Reliable Driving School or Defensive Driving Course

Professional driving instructors can teach your teen the do’s and don’ts of driver safety in an experienced manner. They are thoroughly trained and qualified to provide guidance to new drivers, so they often know better than anyone what tactics work and which ones don’t. Because of this, it may be beneficial to enroll your teenager in a driver’s ed course where he/she can work with an expert to slowly build up the driving skills necessary to tackling congested roads.

Most driving schools also offer defensive skills classes that teach students how to best react in unexpected and emergency situations as well as how to prevent hazards before they happen. Learning to drive in a defensive manner can equip your teenager with an advanced ability to safely drive in areas with heavy, fast-moving traffic.

           Closing Up

At the end of the day, getting onto a bustling freeway or a crowded intersection is always intimidating for inexperienced motorists.

If you work to help your son or daughter gradually build up his/her skills, minimize distractions behind the wheel, comprehend important traffic signs, learn courteous, safe driving habits, and obtain adequate drivers education, your new driver will be well on the way to safely cruising in barren country areas as well as jam-packed streets in the city.

           When To Repair vs Replace

No one likes to deal with a flat tire, but it’s almost inevitable at some point. Tire repair can save your tire to save money over replacement. Understanding how tires are repaired and when a tire can be repaired can help you understand why your mechanic suggests an alternative and why you should spend the money.

When Can Your Tire Be Repaired?

Tires can only be repaired under certain circumstances:

The puncture must be one-quarter inch in diameter or less.

The puncture must occur in the crown of the tire, which is the middle of the tire’s tread.

            Repairs do not overlap.

What Is the Tire Repair Process?

Tire repairs should be made by a tire professional who can inspect the tire for defects. Something that appears to be a simple fix from the outside may have more internal damage than can be immediately seen. Tires have to be completely removed from the rim to be repaired. The technician needs to check the inside and outside of the tire. Nails can cause significant damage to the interior sidewall.

Once a tire is determined to be reparable, the punctured area is stabilized and cleaned. A rubber stem is applied through the puncture to seal the inside of the tire. A special glue is applied to ensure the tire can hold pressure. A patch is applied to the inner liner over the puncture repair. Then, the tire is remounted and inflated to the right pressure. The technician checks for leaks. It can take 60 to 90 minutes to repair a tire.

           When Are Tires Irreparable?

Not every tire can be repaired. If the puncture is outside of the middle of the tire, it cannot be repaired. A puncture over a one-quarter inch in diameter is too big to be repaired. Bulges or bubbles in the sidewall are irreparable. When a tire doesn’t meet repair guidelines, it should be taken out of service and replaced.

Although technicians do use something that resembles a plug to repair tires, a tire plug kit that you can buy at your local supercenter isn’t a good option. It might be a quick fix to let you get to your mechanic a few miles down the road. Tire plugs do fail over time. Contact Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont, California, for tire service and repair.

When you need emergency brake repair services, it can be challenging to determine the best solution. The Process

As your brakes wear out, damaged brake pads can damage your rotors. Deposits from your brake pads, corrosion or dents and cracks can all reduce the efficiency of your brake rotors. If you don’t receive prompt resurfacing or replacement services, you may experience sudden brake failure.

Brake resurfacing involves a qualified technician clearing away all the debris and polishing your rotors. Once cleaned, they provide the smooth surface you need for reliable braking with new brake pads. While your brakes are being resurfaced, ask a technician to inspect your brake calipers and pads to be sure your entire brake system is properly maintained.

           Benefits of Brake Resurfacing

Resurfaced brake rotors keep your brake pads from wearing out quickly. Clean rotors also prevent your calipers from being damaged. Without routine resurfacing, you may have to invest in brake replacement services. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, replacement costs may be significantly higher than brake resurfacing.

           Rotor Replacement

Don’t rule out rotor replacement if you need a thorough brake repair service to restore your vehicle. A damaged rotor may not be repairable with resurfacing. In that case, your only option is a rotor replacement. Similarly, a rotor that is particularly corroded or covered with deposits may actually cost more to resurface than to completely replace. Before you receive brake resurfacing, ask for a quote and compare it with a quote for rotor replacement services.

The next time you need new tires, an oil change or major transmission repair, should you go to an auto repair shop or dealership? These two popular repair categories have many pros and cons, so it’s important to carefully compare them to find the best option for your vehicle and maintenance issue. Compare the main differences and find out for yourself where you should take your vehicle in Belmont, CA.

Because most auto shops are smaller than dealerships, they’re capable of offering more affordable rates. Not only can a local shop compare different part brands and repair options, but they typically charge less due to less overhead. If you’re looking to get a great deal on your vehicle repairs, choose a local shop.

Similarly, local shops routinely rate higher in terms of customer service and overall customer satisfaction. While a dealership is typically larger and offers more service bays, a local repair shop can fit your schedule and create a more personalized service experience.

Most dealers offer more comprehensive warranty options. A dealership can offer manufacturer warranties, many of which require installation by a dealership. Depending on your maintenance issue and your local auto shop, a local repair shop may not have as long of a warranty.

Many qualified and experienced technicians work at both dealerships and local auto shops. If you go to a highly rated garage, you can expect a high level of expertise at both locations. A dealership may have more up-to-date information about recalls, warranties, and common issues with your specific make and model of vehicle. Local shops, however, typically have technicians with a broad range of experience. A local technician has worked on a wide range of makes and models and understands the differences between common vehicle issues.

Why Do We Have Smog Checks?

           Do new Vehicles Need them?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires smog checks, or emissions tests, to protect the environment and public health from the dangerous effects of car pollution in the air. California has some of the highest smog check standards in the country. The State of Washington requires non-exempt gas vehicles to pass vehicle emissions tests as part of vehicle registration, then every two years after.

What Is Included in a Smog Test?

Smog checks test the amount of pollutants your vehicle is emitting. It can include some or all of these tests:

In Washington, vehicle owners must take the car to an authorized testing site. There is a testing fee. If your vehicle passes the inspection, you receive a decal for the window and a report about the emissions inspection. If there are problems, the owner must make repairs before having the vehicle retested.

Tips for Passing the Smog Test in Washington

Make sure to allow yourself time to get your car tested before it’s up for re-registration. If you may be out of town, take care of your car before you go. Keeping up with your car’s maintenance schedule can help you maintain good emissions. Your mechanic can address many problems before you have to take the smog test.

If your vehicle’s check engine light is on when you take the smog test, it will not pass. Drive your car for ten or more minutes before having the test. If you get a new battery before the test, wait about two to three days to let the Onboard Diagnostic system reset. Your vehicle should have an oil change before the emissions test. You don’t want to have dirty oil. Address any problems with OBD-II before you take your car to the test site.

If you do discover a problem with your car’s emission system, check the manufacturer’s warranty. Some OBD-II systems have an 8-year warranty. If you need a list of places to get emissions testing, check the Washington DMV website. Contact Spiteri's Complete Auto Service in Belmont for a smog check on your vehicle.

Once you determine whether your car needs an inspection or not, it’s time to find a STAR smog check station. Be aware that there will be some STAR stations that may only perform a test or a repair. Make sure to pick a station that fits the needs of your vehicle (Spiteri’s Auto Service is a proud STAR station that provides tests AND repairs!) and that during your visit you have your:

If you pass the emissions test your mechanic will provide you with a signed emissions report that you can present to the DMV. If you do not pass the test, you may have a malfunctioning part. Here a few faulty pieces that may have caused you to fail:

            Ignition/spark plugs

If you are at a STAR station that does tests and repairs (like us!) then, pending availability, they may be able to fix the part, re-administer the test, and provide you with a signed emissions report that same day!

           Vist the DMV

Once you have passed the emissions test and your mechanic has provided you with a signed emissions report, visit the DMV and follow any additional instructions they may have for you. Many STAR stations can also send the emissions report electronically which is helpful for those that want to do it through email or over the phone.

Though it can be tedious, smog checks are an important part of keeping our environment safe and limiting the carbon footprint we leave on the world.

Oil Change Myths You Shouldn’t Listen To

When it comes to changing your oil, you’ll probably hear tons of advice on how to approach it. Some of that advice comes from sound logic while other advice seem a little…off. Unsure what’s fact and fiction? Spiteri’s Auto Service has you covered. Check out our list of the top five myths when it comes to changing your oil.

1.Visit the dealer to change your oil

Though it is understandable to go to your dealer, who will know a little more about your vehicle than others, it is not mandatory. Despite popular belief you can visit your preferred repair ship, or do it yourself, and still maintain your warranty as long as you record when you changed your oil.

2.Change your oil every 3,000 miles

So this isn’t so much a myth as it is an outdated thought process. With older cars it was certainly a viable option to change your oil every 3,000 miles, but the quality and craftsmanship of cars have come a long way since then. A lot of cars can easily make it to 7,000 and 10,000 miles before their FIRST oil change. There are even some cars that can make it 15,000 miles before their first visit.

              3.Use synthetic? Stick with synthetic

This is simply not true. Though it is commonplace to hear about sticking with synthetic oil once you start using it, the truth is that you can freely switch between synthetic and petroleum oil. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you’re using oil that is appropriate for your car.

             4.Synthetic Oil > Everything else

Though there is some truth to this, it’s not entirely accurate. Synthetic oil is gentler to your car and is overall better but the differences between the two are so small that spending the extra money may not be worth it, especially if you are on a budget. If you can spend the money, go for it! If you are on a budget, you can sleep soundly knowing that other oil products will do the job just fine.

5.Seeing dark oil means you have to change immediately

Hold your horses! Just because you see dark oil before your next oil change does not mean you need to get it changed immediately. Oil is darkened through a process called oxidation and can happen at a quicker rate when the oil is exposed to higher engine temperatures. Our advice? Stick with the vehicle manufacturer’s scheduled oil changes.

Smog levels in California used to be incredibly dangerous in the 60’s because there were increasing numbers of vehicles driving on the roads, and no laws in place to control the amount of emissions being let out of them. Since the Clean Air act of 1970 and the development of the California

There are several components that go into a vehicle smog test, which is a requirement in California in order to keep our air fresh and clean. Are you worried about your car passing? Maybe you’re just thinking ahead about what you can do to ensure your car passes. We’ve made a list of things you can do to make sure your car passes when the time comes!

           1. Check Engine Light

If you take a car into a smog test with the check engine light, it’s an automatic test failure. If your check engine light is, on you should have it diagnosed and resolved prior to smog testing in order to avoid not being able to register your car. The worst part is if you can’t register your vehicle, you can’t drive it legally.

           2. Take A Drive

The more you can drive your car above 20mph for 2 weeks prior to your testing, the better. This helps your catalytic converter get hot enough to burn away any oil or gas residues that may be inside of the engine, hindering you from passing your smog test. This is especially important for vehicles that are mainly used for short trips. On shorter trips, the catalytic converter may not get hot enough to perform its job, and the leftover residues stuck inside could prevent your car from passing. It’s also a good idea to take your vehicle for at least a 20-minute drive before the test to clear it as well.

           3. Stay Up to Date with Oil Changes

Clean oil in your vehicle is important for any inspection, but specifically for smog testing because dirty oil in your car’s engine will emit extra pollutants that are bad for the environment and for your smog test. For even more security, it’s a good idea to ask your mechanic to visually inspect your engine to make sure all hoses are holding up well and intact.

           4. Catch up on any Needed Maintenance

The best way to make sure you pass the smog inspection or basically any car inspection is to follow a strict car maintenance routine just to make sure nothing goes wrong in the first place. If you haven’t done so, it’s a great idea to get into a shop for a tune-up at least 2 weeks prior to your smog test. When your mechanic checks your car, he will find any issues that may contribute to a smog test failure, and he will probably also unplug your car’s battery. Most cars need at least 2 weeks of driving after a battery disconnection to run all of the diagnostics necessary to pass a smog

           test.

           5. Make sure Tires are Fully Inflated

While your car is being tested, your tires will likely be placed on rollers to make the vehicle run at high speeds to check emissions. If your tires aren’t fully inflated, your engine is forced to work harder to run at high speeds, running the risk of emitting dangerous fumes.

           6. Make sure Coolant and Gas Levels are Ok

Running the vehicle at a high speed while it sits stationary in the shop means that less air can make its way into the engine to cool it off. This means it’s important to make sure you coolant levels are good before testing. That also goes without saying your gas level should also be ok when you take your car in for its test to avoid exposing the fuel pump in the bottom of the tank that could pump vapor into the system, resulting in failure.

           7. Ask for a Pre-Inspection Service

Most shops will provide an affordable price for a pre-inspection Smog test that won’t result in not being able to get your vehicle registered. This test shows whether or not the car will pass without officially recording the results. With this information, the driver can fix anything necessary in order to pass the real test.

           8. Use a Fuel Additive

Sometimes it’s a good idea to consider a fuel additive to clean out anything gunking up your fuel injectors, as this would contribute to a failed smog test. This is especially recommended for older vehicles.

All of this being said, the best way to be ready for your smog test is to keep up on your regular car maintenance, but these are measures to check just in case you might not have been on top of your maintenance regime. Keep your car healthy, and we can keep our air healthy too!

Driving is a privilege, not a right, yet so many who drive dangerously seem to become increasingly unaware of how being an unsafe driver can affect others and themselves. Though driving gets us from point A to B much more quickly than walking does, it’s important to take safety precautions when you’re on the road. Not only should you look out for yourself, but for others as well.

           Non-Asbestos Organic

Non-asbestos organic brake pads, or simply known as organic, are the least expensive of the bunch and also the most popular type found on new passenger cars. These pads are constructed of organic, non-metallic materials like rubber, fiberglass, Kevlar, and resins. Advantages to this style of construction is low cost, low dust, less stress on other brake system components, and they’re quiet. While these are all great benefits, there is a major drawback. Because of their lack of metal fibers, organic pads wear out quickly and have the worst stopping performance. If you’re shopping on a budget and don’t need performance or heavy-duty braking capabilities, this pad type is a good, economical option.

           Semi-Metallic

Unlike organic brake pads, semi-metallic contain a mixture of metal fibers – up to 70% depending on the compound – packed within an organic resin. These metal fibers dramatically improve overall performance and durability which is great for heavy duty applications. Some disadvantages are increased noise, very dusty, and they accelerate wear on other brake components. If you own a sports car or heavy duty truck and demand a lot from the brakes, semi-metallic are the best choice because of their ability to draw heat away from the rotor to resist fading and they operate in a very wide temperature range.

           Ceramic

The last brake pad we’re going to talk about is ceramic. These pads are made of dense ceramic materials similar to pottery with copper fibers embedded within. This type of pad offers good all-around braking performance, very low dust, silent operation, and the longest lifespan of them all. The biggest con of ceramic pads is the cost; they are usually the most expensive of the bunch. Also, they are not the best choice if you live in an extreme cold climate or if you need them for heavy duty driving or racing. Otherwise, they are a fantastic option for most road-going passenger cars and are commonly found on European luxury vehicles.

           Which Pads Do You Need?

What you need comes down to the vehicle you drive, the conditions you drive in, and your budget. If you want an inexpensive pad for your commuter car, an organic version is a budget friendly choice. If you need a heavy duty pad for towing or racing, then you would want to buy a semi-metallic pad. Keep in mind that semi-metallic pads are made of different concentrations of metal, so check the manufacturer’s description to see the type of driving they’re designed for. Lastly, if you demand more performance from your brake pads than an organic version would offer and want to keep your wheels free of brake dust, go for the ceramic option.

But have you thought about what happens when you prolong that oil change? If not, we’ve decided to break down the important of an oil change, especially what happens if you miss one.

Ultimately the point of oil is to keep your engine lubricated and cooled. Oil is a great tool for pulling heat from certain parts and circulating it equally throughout the engine so that your coolant can do it’s job and keep your engine from overheating. Because this is a primary function for oil, manufacturers add viscosity modifiers to the oil to keep it a thicker consistency when your engine reaches it’s highest temperatures. But those high temperatures also break down those modifiers over time. This makes the oil less effective at those high temperatures because it’s thinner. Thinner oil means there is less lubrication in the engine to keep it cool and create a barrier between the metal parts and gears that are sliding past one another.

Sludge is Not A Engine’s Best Friend

The viscosity modifiers are not the only aspect of oil that breaks down in high temperatures! The anti-oxidizing and anti-wear additives will also break down due to the heat over time in your engine. These additives keeps your oil, oil in a sense. When these additives start to break down, sludge can form within the oil. Sludge can make it difficult for oil to flow throughout the engine and squeeze itself between the moving metal parts. If sludge does start to form, it’s best to talk to your mechanic about whether or not you need an engine flush. Engine flushes can help remove some of the sludge from your engine.

Too Many Particles = A Corroded Engine

Sludge is not the only thing you need to worry about. Oil will pick up normal particles and debre from your engine. This is why having a consistent oil change is so important. As oil picks up these particles, your oil will be drained and replaced. This allows the older particle filled oil to take those particles with it out of your engine, essentially cleaning it up. But if you wait too long for an oil change, your oil will pick up too many particles and they will start to settle inside your engine. This means that when you do change your oil, it will not take those particles with it. Instead those particles will sit inside your engine, causing it to corrode over time.

Your Engine Can’t Handle That Much Stress

Missing an oil change ultimately puts unneeded stress on your engine. Because the oil is thinner, parts have the opportunity to grind together. This makes them wear down faster, deposit metal particles into your oil, and ultimately break apart. These damages can take years off your vehicle’s lifespan and downgrade it’s performance.

Did You Know Your Engine Could Weld Together?

Ultimately, if you wait for too long your engine’s oil loses its capability to do it’s job. Because your oil acts as a coolant as we said in the first part of this blog, your engine could potentially be destroyed from overheating. An engine is full of metal on metal pieces that generate extreme levels of heat. The average temperature of a performing engine is 195 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. If your oil doesn’t have the capabilities to evenly spread the heat throughout your engine, certain sections would generate so much heat and friction that they could weld themselves together. This would cause your engine to seize and destroy it permanently.

It’s important to listen to your brakes. They are an important safety feature in every vehicle that can help keep you and other drivers on the road safe. But how can you listen, if you don’t know your brakes language and what they are trying to tell you. We’ve decided to help you with that. We’ve decoded the five most common symptoms your brakes use to help you know when it’s time to change your brakes or see a professional.

           Is that squealing I hear?

Squealing and screeching are your brakes only way to let you know when they are running out of pad. In fact, most manufacturers build in a safety mechanism that makes brakes squeal before they are completely worn out. It’s meant to give you a warning that it’s time to schedule an appointment with your mechanic or pull out the jack and try a DIY brake edition.

           Try to Avoid the Grind!

Grinding and Growling comes in when your brakes are completely worn out. It’s the sound of metal on metal and means that you no longer have viable brakes. Not only will it take you longer to brake, but you are doing damage to your rotor. After enough time, you can even warp your rotor, making your brake repair even more expensive.

Does Your Car Have the Shakes?

When we say vibrating, there are two ways your car can vibrate to let you know your brakes are trying to leave you hanging. The first is simple. If you are trying to brake and your brake pedal is vibrating or shaking, then your brakes are going bad. The more extreme way is if your entire car shakes. If your entire car is shaking when you attempt to brake, there is a larger issue. This could be a symptom from waiting too long to replace your brakes or a sign of something worse. If your entire car is shaking when you try to brake or hit a certain speed, be sure to take it into your mechanic immediately. It will be cheaper & safer than the alternative.

Do you have the Sinking Pedal?

Just like vibrating, a sinking pedal is a symptom of a larger brake issue. If your pedal is sinking all the way to the ground, it’s a sign that you are low on brake fluid. Brake fluid does not typically evaporate. If you are suddenly low, then you probably have a leak. Brake fluid is one of the most important part of your braking system. It is what creates the pressure so that you can actually brake. Driving on the road with a leaky braking system is extremely dangerous to you and others. If your pedal is sinking, be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible with your mechanic.

Most cars come with one or two dashboard notifications that revolve around your braking system. One is the ABS light and the other is the Brake System light. These lights can tell you different things about your brake system to give you an idea of the problem and to point your mechanic to the right way. Your ABS light is connected to your “Anti-lock Brake Computer” and stands for Anti-brake system. It can light up in a few instances depending on your car’s make, model, and safety features. In some cases, it will light up when you slam on the brake. It’s indicating that your ABS has kicked in. If this is the case, it will typically turn back off when the crisis resolves and your driving normally. The other time is when your computer has set a code. If this is the case, it needs to be seen by a professional to determine the problem and reset the computer.

The Brake System Light alerts you when there is another issue with your braking system. It is triggered when your parking brake is on, when your brake fluid is low, and sometimes when your ABS system has a problem. While your parking brake is an easily solved problem, the others indicate that a professional needs to look at your braking system soon.

The transmission in your car is one of the most important and complicated components in the entire vehicle. The sophisticated hydraulics and computer controlled electronic portions work together to change gears within the engine. The engine transfers power to the wheels in order to move your car. While this kind of repair can be costly, routine service and fluid changes can help maintain your manual or automatic transmission. This is why it’s important to pay attention to any warning signs your transmission is trying to give you. Check out the most common signs below:

Have you looked at your driveway or parking spot lately? It’s easy to forget to check as you pull in or pull out but this can be the easiest way to detect a leaky transmission. Let your car sit for the night and then check under your spot. If you see some discoloration or a puddle you may want to bring your vehicle to your local shop or check your fluids. Fluid leaks can lead to big and expensive car problems quickly. Transmission fluid is essential to car’s shifting capabilities. Without the correct amount, you are putting extra ware and tear on your transmission which can diminish it’s lifespan significantly. How do you know if your transmission fluid? Transmission fluid is a bright red fluid and should be easy to spot.

As we’ve described above, Transmission fluid is super important as it is responsible for keeping the transmission parts lubricated and temperature regulated. While you can always check for a leak, transmission fluid has a unique odor that you can also identify it by. This fluid has a slightly sweet or tart odor and often attracts animals. If you start to notice a burning odor, this is the time to schedule (quickly) your next fluid change.

           Warning Light Activity

Most cars nowadays have sensors that will pick up irregularities and trigger your car’s computer system to let it know there is an issue. In terms of your transmission specifically, sometimes sensors can pick up problems that you aren’t able to see or smell. One in particular is your transmission temperature which will tell you if your the fluid is burning hotter than it should. If this light engages, check the fluid level and engine coolant* level right away.

*Note: never check coolant if your car’s engine is warm/hot.

           Dipstick Inspection

An easy way to check your car’s transmission fluid is to check the dipstick. If your unsure where it is, the best resource is to check your owner’s manual. With your car in neutral or park, let your engine run until it is warm before pulling the dipstick out (do not turn your engine off). To check the fluid color, first rub between your index finger and thumb- the fluid should be pinkish and almost clear. A brownish or burnt smelling fluid means it can no longer dissipate the heat the transmission generates and needs to be changed.

           Movement Delay

Lack of response or a delay in movement could mean issues. Since your car is designed to go into the correct gear every time, a hesitation is a definite sign something isn’t right. This can be jolting with every change in gear or having your engine rev up unusual before allowing you to change. This is a serious safety concern because you may not be able to shift gears up or down. It can also become a costly repair if it isn’t fixed sooner than later.

Your transmission is a vital piece of your engine and needs to be checked and maintenance like other aspects of your car, especially if you are showing any of the warning signs above. Not sure what’s wrong or what to do? Bring your car in today so that we can help you keep your car in tip-top shape.

Tires are what keep you rolling… literally. According to a recent AAA study 60% of Americans don’t check their tires regularly, which can lead to disastrous results. A flat tire or a blowout can make for a very dangerous situation on the road. Here are 4 tips to help keep you on the road.

Check your tire pressure often

Look on the inner door jam of your driver’s side door to find your ideal tire pressure. Tire pressures can change with the weather, so it’s a good practice to check your tires at least once a month. Remember, both over and under inflating can cause blowouts.

           Rotate your tires regularly

Rotating your tires ensures that all your tires wear evenly. Because the weight of the car is not evenly balanced, your tires are going to wear at different rates. Regular rotation every 5,000-7,000 miles can help balance this out.

           Measure your tire tread depth

If you’re starting to notice your tire tread is disappearing, you’ve waited too long to check. The easiest way to check your tire tread is the penny test. Place a penny in one of the treads of your tires. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires.

           Don’t forget your spare!

When you get a flat tire, the last thing you want to see is that your spare is also flat! Check the tire pressure in your spare when you’re checking your other tires.

How To Avoid Common Road Hazards

Most drivers don’t know how to avoid common road hazards, and what to do when encountering dangerous situations on the road. We’ve included a list below of some common road hazards, preventative measures to avoid them entirely, and what to do if you find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation on the road.

           Tire blowouts.

These can be especially scary, as the thumps and thuds and the jerking of your vehicle can easily send you straight into a panic. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t panic. Focus on controlling your vehicle and getting safely to the side of the road to assess the situation. To help avoid these situations, be sure to always be mindful of debris on the road, and keep your tires properly maintained, as weak tires are more likely to lead to blowouts.

           Hydroplaning.

If you feel your vehicle skidding out of control, take your foot off the gas pedal and keep your steering wheel in the direction you’re traveling. Try not to jerk the wheel, as this can cause you to very quickly lose control of the vehicle. Again, keeping your tires properly maintained will lessen your chances of hydroplaning, and be sure to slow down when road conditions are less than ideal.

           Loss of visibility.

Foggy conditions, heavy rain or snow can very quickly lead to a loss in visibility. If you find yourself in this situation, turn on your hazards and slow down. If it’s possible and seemingly safe, pull over to the side of the road and wait for the weather to improve. If you feel it’s more dangerous to pull off the road, maintain a slow speed and follow either another vehicle’s lights or the reflectors in the road closely until you find an area where you can safely pull over. To avoid this situation, be sure to check the weather before hitting the road!

           Animals in the Road.

Whether it be a deer, squirrel, moose or otherwise, animals dashing into the can lead to serious vehicle damage, or worse. Some animals are more active at dawn and dusk, and often travel in packs. This being the case, be especially careful during these hours of the day, and be extra cautious if you see one animal nearby – as there may be more. Slow down and practice extra caution when you see animal crossing signs, and consider driving in the middle lane of a multi-lane roadway, for a lesser chance of an animal-related collision.

Our best advice? Avoid texting, putting on makeup or eating your lunch while behind the wheel, and always (ALWAYS) wear your seatbelts! Road conditions, weather conditions and fellow drivers are unpredictable – so make sure you’re alert and prepared at all times.
